Star Wars Prequels Campaign

This is the first in a series of posts that summarize our recently completed West End (d6-based) Star Wars Campaign, sometimes affectionately called the “Retcon Campaign” because of its basic theme: playing through an alternative version of episodes I through III, to write our own prequels, in a sense.

(This game is in no way associated with LucasArts, the actual canonical Star Wars Universe, and should only be interpreted as laudatory toward Star Wars, which all of us dearly love.)

The game finished Monday, September 10, so this post is a summary of the events in our epic story!

The Cast

Wizards of the Coast designer Rodney Thompson (@wotc_rodney) Gamemastered the game. He was the lead designer and developer of the d20-esque Star Wars Saga Edition product line, in addition to his work on Dungeons & Dragons and the Lords of Waterdeep board game. An all-around Star Wars buff, he gets this look of pure bliss anytime he gets a chance to break out his massive collection of Star Wars minis.

Dan Helmick played Anakin Skywalker, a passionate young man in a swoop gang on the jungle planet Chathos, with great potential and an even greater destiny. Dan is on the digital team at WotC and has a long history with all sorts of gaming. He has an amazing ability to startle the rest of the players with seemingly inexplicable but nonetheless show-stopping moments.

Logan Bonner (@loganbonner) played Obi-Wan Kenobi, a wise Jedi Knight and ally of the Republic Admiral Bail Organa, leader of the massive Alderaan fleet. Formerly of Wizards of the Coast, Logan has spent the last several years as a freelance game designer on everything from D&D to Margaret Weis Productions to Paizo’s Pathfinder, where he is currently in a persistent gig as an editor.

Derek Guder (@frequentbeef) played Janos Kreel, a scarred clone trooper turned mercenary, formerly under the command of General Organa. Derek is an organizer for Ashes of Athas, the Dark Sun Living Campaign, and works for Gen Con LLC (where he organizes all the games and events). He is constantly jet-setting around the country with his serious beard and single braid of pink hair.

Chris Tulach (@christulach) played BL3K (“bleak”), an often acerbic droid closely bonded to Janos Kreel and fiercely possessive of his extremely fast transport ship called the Star Phoenix. Chris is D&D Program Manager for Wizards of the Coast and is heavily involved in organized play and the D&D Encounters program.

Erik Scott de Bie (@erikscottdebie) played Zythe Zera, a mysterious Falleen spy and assassin who will do anything to protect her people from the predations of the Empire. Erik is a freelance fantasy author and game designer whose fifth Forgotten Realms novel, Shadowbane: Eye of Justice, came out this month. Check out his website/blog at erikscottdebie.com.

And without further ado . . .

Episode I: Balance of the Force

Episode II: Rise of the Empire (coming soon!)

Episode III: Fall of the Jedi (coming soon!)
